When planning your Disney trip you are allowed to choose three Fastpasses per day for your trip. You get to make these reservations 60 days before the first day of your trip, but you should do your research well before your sign up day so you know exactly which options to pick. Luckily, I've done some research for you and I'm here to share what you should fastpass in Animal Kingdom, what you definitely shouldn't, and a few in between.
This is my last post in a series about Fastpass Picks, so be sure to also check out my Magic Kingdom Picks, Hollywood Studios Picks, and Epcot Picks, and then subscribe to my newsletter so you won't miss my choices for Animal Kingdom.
Also, if you haven't already, be sure to check out my previous articles on the number one attraction to fastpass in each park and what to consider when making fastpass+ selections.
Before we get into the details of each ride, I want to mention that I recommend trying to get all your fastpasses for the morning because I recommend only doing half a day in Animal Kingdom. There's just less attractions there and your evening would be better spent getting a head start in another park like Epcot or Magic Kingdom.
Okay so here's the list of everything that you can Fastpass in Animal Kingdom:
Tier One (pick 1):
Tier Two (pick 2):
- Expedition Everest
- Festival of the Lion King
- Finding Nemo - The Musical
- It's Tough to Be a Bug
- Kali River Rapids
- Kilimanjaro Safaris
- Meet Favorite Disney Pals at Adventurers Outpost
- Primeval Whirl
- Rivers of Light
Now I like to divide the choices up into three sections - Must Fast Pass, Possibly Fastpass, and Definitely Don't Fastpass. I'll also list what I've found to be the average wait time for each choice. Keep in mind that these are just my choices and you and your family might have different priorities than I do.
First, let's talk top tier, because Animal Kingdom will be your easiest top tier decision out of all the parks.
Tier One Must Fastpass:
Avatar Flight of Passage (90-200 mins)
This ride is incredible!!! Seriously!!! This is a ride that I would wait over two hours for... I didn't, because I fastpassed it... but still, I would! It's almost like Soarin' where you get the sensation of flying, but instead of hang gliding, you're riding a banshee. They spared no expense on the design of this simulator. It's 3D, you can smell the woodsy scents of pandora, and you can even feel your banshee breathing between your legs! It's incredible! Seriously, just do yourself a favor and fastpass it!
Tier One Definitely Don't Fastpass:
Na'vi River Journey (60-120 mins)
The Na'vi River Journey is a simple indoor boat ride, somewhat similar It's a Small World. It gives you the sensation of traveling through Pandora at night. It's really a beautiful ride with everything glowing under black lights and it features a really neat animatronic avatar at the end, so I definitely wouldn't skip it, but given the choice between this or the Flight of Passage, I'd Fastpass the Flight of Passage without hesitation!
On our last trip to the parks, we did River Journey first thing in the morning on an extra magic hours day and walked right on. So, if you're smart with your planning, you can find a time to hit this one when there's a really short line.
Now let's move onto the 11 Tier Two choices. Remember, you only get to pick two of these.
Tier Two Definitely Fastpass:
Kilimanjaro Safaris (45-120 mins)
Kilimanjaro Safaris, to me, has always been the highlight of Animal Kingdom. It's a true safari trek through the wildlife preserves that surround the "Africa" section of the Animal Kingdom. It lasts about 20 minutes and if you're lucky you'll see tons of lions, giraffes, hippos, rhinos, elephants, and zebras!
Its line is typically one of the fastest to fill up, since the best time to see the animals is first thing in the morning. This is when they're fed, so they're usually more active. So, I would definitely get a fastpass, but be sure to get an early one!
Expedition Everest (45-60 mins)
Everest is the only coaster in Animal Kingdom, and it's one of the best coasters at Disney World. So it makes sense that it has one of the longest lines in the park. It's a fantastic coaster, so it's well worth a fastpass!
Tier Two Possibly Fastpass:
Kali River Rapids (45-60 mins)
I really debated whether or not to put Kali River Rapids or Expedition Everest in my "must fastpass" category. I ended up going with Everest, since it tends to have slightly longer lines, but if Everest isn't your thing, then definitely fastpass the river rapids! They're a great way to cool off in the crazy Florida heat!
DINOSAUR (30-60 mins)
I've added this one to the "possibly fastpass" category, simply because I don't think its a great enough ride to warrant the wait times that it typically has. I mean, it's okay, but there are much better simulation rides in Animal Kingdom and in the other Disney World parks, so personally, I wouldn't want to wait more than fifteen minutes for this one.
Meet Disney Pals at Adventurers Outpost (20-75 mins)
If you've read my post on fastpass picks for Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Hollywood Studios, then you know that I tend to advise against using a fastpass for a character meet-and-greet. Instead, I recommend going to a character meal. Plus, this character meeting spot is only for Mickey and Minnie. You could instead meet both of them at Chef Mickey or the Garden Grill in Epcot.
However, if you have small children that wouldn't like Expedition Everest or Kali River Rapids, then this might be a good one to use a fastpass on.
Primeval Whirl (20-90 mins)
This is one that I tend to skip when I'm in Animal Kingdom because it's not really unique to Disney World. Many amusement parks have this same model of "family coaster." I grew up going to Hershey Park and there's a coaster there called the Wild Mouse that's nearly identical to Primeval Whirl.
However, it can have insanely long queues at times, so I included it in the "possibly fastpass" category because if you like this type of coaster, then it would be a justifiable fastpass choice.
Tier Two Definitely Don't Fastpass:
It's Tough to Be a Bug (10-30 mins)
This one is located inside the tree of life, which is probably the best thing about it. In its queue you get an amazing view of all of the intricate animal carvings that decorate the tree. This is one of the main reasons that I don't like fastpassing this one. Instead, take the time in line to play eye-spy or to simply appreciate the incredible craft that went into making the beautiful tree of life.
Festival of the Lion King, Finding Nemo - The Musical, Rivers of Light
And, as always, I've lumped the performances together at the end. And like my other posts, I'll remind you that I don't like fastpassing performances because in most cases, it doesn't save you any time. Instead, it just gets you a better seat in the audience. So if that's important to you, by all means, use a fastpass here, but I'd rather bypass some lines to give myself more time for rides!
Well, that's my list. Please remember that these are just my opinions and what I typically fastpass when I go to the parks. And, remember that at the end of the day, you probably will have to wait in some lines. It is Disney after all!
